About
Carmen Chan

This is me. A clinical psychologist, who is driven by her own personal journey of healing and transformation. Inspired by my own experiences, I am dedicated to helping people in navigating their own challenges and discovering their inner resilience.

During my school time, I recognized the power of psychology in transforming lives. Struggles of my own with anxiety and depression ignited a deep curiosity about the human mind and factors that contribute to mental well-being. Motivated by the desire to make a difference while learning to accept myself whole-heartedly, I embarked on a path of self-discovery and professional development.

And, here I am, being able to be aware of my personal values and better prepared for any upcoming challenges in the future. Central to my approach is the establishment of a safe space where you can openly explore your thoughts, emotions, and life experiences without fear of judgement. Together, we collaborate to develop individualized treatment plans that align with your goals.

If you’re ready to embark on a transformative journey of self-discovery and healing, I warmly invite you to reach out. Let’s navigate life challenges, explore your strengths, and empower you to the life you wish.

Last but not least, here’s a quote for you:

When breakdown, We breakdance. When burnout, We burnt cheesecake.

Jom break some dance and burn some cheesecake!

Success Stories

Overcoming Anxiety Through Trust and Therapy

Due to the pandemic, the nation entered a state of alert, and frontline workers became the hope of the people. One individual was among them. Due to the high-intensity work demands, which involved their own and their patients' lives, this individual fell into a whirlpool of self-doubt and lack of confidence. Gradually, they became very anxious and started engaging in repetitive checking behaviors to relieve their anxiety, which affected their work, daily life, marital relationship, and parent-child relationship. As a result, this individual became reclusive and despondent. When I first met them, they showed resistance, indicating that they were brought by their partner and had no intention of seeing a therapist. I responded with a smile and said, "Okay, I understand." The room immediately fell silent, and the individual just sat there. Ten minutes later, I said, "Well, since we have to pass the time anyway, why don't we talk about something?" The individual hesitated and then said, "Okay." Over time, the individual gradually opened their heart. After undergoing eight sessions of intensive Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and gradually exposing themselves to social situations, I helped the individual overcome their anxiety and fear. The individual also expressed a desire to return to work. Before leaving, they said, "Thank you for your patience and understanding. When I was ready to give up on myself, you didn't give up on me." Hearing this feedback, I felt immense comfort and emotion, reinforcing my belief that effective therapy starts with building trust.

Empowering Families Through Behavioral Therapy and Support

The father has bipolar disorder, and the mother suffers from depression. A six-year-old child was brought in by their parents, looking at me with a face full of curiosity. The therapist and the child started a question-and-answer session until the topic of the father came up. The child immediately asked me to speak softly, saying it would be bad if the father heard us, and then avoided talking about him. It turned out that whenever the father exhibited symptoms, the child, not understanding what was happening to him, could only hide in fear. Gradually, the child began to show verbal and behavioral aggression towards the mother. The mother, not knowing what to do, could only allow the child's behavior. Was the child aware of the appropriateness of their actions? Not really. Through drawing and communication, it was discovered that the child couldn't distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate behaviors, simply imitating what they saw. After undergoing behavioral therapy and parental training, the frequency of the child's inappropriate language and behavior began to decrease, and the parents also learned how to communicate effectively with their child. Before leaving, the child asked me to squat down. I thought they wanted to whisper something to me, but before I could react, the child gave me a hug. Perhaps, many times, we think that children are too young to understand much, but in reality, they remember everything we do and say, which can even become a guiding light for them in the future.

Finding Self-Acceptance Beyond Diagnosis

During the first meeting with the client, they disclosed that they might have autism but were also uncertain if they might have OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder). Throughout our conversations, the client focused on describing symptoms they had noticed. They repeatedly expressed, "I really feel like something is wrong with me, but no one wants to believe it." Before concluding our first meeting, the client emphasized their desire to understand if they had a psychological disorder because they believed they could only accept themselves and others would believe them only after receiving an official diagnosis. Subsequently, psychological assessment began. Each meeting was akin to Holmes and I exploring each symptom, assessing various possibilities of psychological disorders. However, it seemed that the assessments showed many possibilities each time. After five meetings, the client started to place less emphasis on the results because during each meeting, they felt taken seriously and came to understand that they deserved trust, acceptance, and a listening ear. Sometimes, many people believe they must possess certain qualities to be seen as worthy. Yet, fundamentally, a person's existence alone is deserving of love; it's just that they may not grasp this concept yet.
